Long Island Site Offers Twitter

(Long Island, N.Y.) Executives at Long Island Exchange like Long Island, and they also like Twitter, so they’ve created a section on their popular Long Island web site LongIslandExchange.com that aggregates what Long Islanders are “tweeting” about.

The two-year-old Twitter service allows users to broadcast short messages of up to 140 characters – tweets – to computers, cell phones and other wireless devices of “followers” who sign up. Since Long Island Exchange is now supporting twitter, users can automatically feed in their twitter updates by filling in their twitter account details at Long Island Exchange. Every time the user updates their Twitter page - via cell phone, computer, or what have you, those updates will immediately appear on their Long Island Exchange profile. What’s equally interesting is that users can actually update the popular Twitter.com web site without having to visit it. Any updates made from their profile at Long Island Exchange act as a mobile device and update the Twitter website.

“LongIslandExchange.com is one of the busiest and most visited web sites in the Long Island area. We’ve upgraded the social networking portion of our web site to support Twitter as it’s clear that these types of social networking tools are preferred not only for pleasure, but for business. A recent article stated that Twitter is now growing by 5K - 10K new accounts everyday with a total user base of 4 - 5 million. Major media outlets are beginning to now embrace Twitter. For example, CNN’s Rick Sanchez is a prominent figure using Twitter for his 3PM Eastern news show updates, along with others from The New York Times, Fox News and Reuters - they’re all using Twitter now with great success. As far as I know, and I watch our competitors pretty closely, we’re the first Long Island site to integrate this functionality, but we’re just following the footsteps here - it’s not rocket science.” said owner and Chief Executive Officer John Colascione.

Research continues to show that social networks just aren’t going anywhere. Internet users choose social networking sites as their platform of choice. Advertising on those networks and even setting up a company or marketer’s own page, which many large corporations are doing, increases awareness of commercial products and services. Advertisers are expected to spend $1.9 billion on social networks by 2010, up from $280 million in 2006.
