Fresh Logic Studios has built an addictive Flash mapping interface, totaling worldwide "Tweets". The screen refreshes every 6 seconds or so with a different Twitterer's standing report ; and profile details are shown on top of their location on a map. A toolchest permits you to toggle between perspectives - and the Microsoft Virtual Earth graphics are striking. Each of the Twitterers has their own lollipop on the map to notice where they are and there's ( limited ) language support.
But the Atlas is not just a visualization device for standing addicts.
There's also a practical side : users can get directions, search for local shops and services, see what events are coming up in places around the globe, and even see where the most costly gas stations are around. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced today he is running for re-election. The announcement took the form of a mayoral message on Twitter directing people to a video on YouTube, which in turn directed viewers to his new campaign Web site, where surfers can further connect to his Facebook page. Rybak’s only announced rival (aside from perennial candidate Dick Franson ) is Bob Miller, director of the city’s Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

Rybak’s social-media rollout recalls the highly praised campaign of President-elect Barack Obama, for which Rybak was working even before its inception, during the early “Draft Obama” movement. It also punctuates a period of speculation that Rybak would get a job in the Obama administration or would instead announce a bid to run for governor in 2010. Whether that punctuation is a full stop, a comma or a dash is another question.

UPDATE: Rybak tells MPR he’s still not ruling out running for governor.

Every time the user updates their Twitter page - via cell phone, computer, or what have you, those updates will immediately appear on their Long Island Exchange profile. What’s equally interesting is that users can actually update the popular Twitter.com web site without having to visit it. Any updates made from their profile at Long Island Exchange act as a mobile device and update the Twitter website.

“LongIslandExchange.com is one of the busiest and most visited web sites in the Long Island area. We’ve upgraded the social networking portion of our web site to support Twitter as it’s clear that these types of social networking tools are preferred not only for pleasure, but for business. Search Limits on Twitter?

Why on Earth would Twitter limit the number of Twitter searches a Twitter user may conduct -- a typical user, such as yours truly, not some resource-piggy third-party app or bot?

And, why on Earth would one of the most talked-about companies on the Internet make it so darn difficult to get an answer to such simple question?

Let's start with the first question first: Last Friday afternoon I was doing what Twitter insists it wants me to do, namely trying to find friends and acquaintances who are also Twitter users so that we can "follow" each other's "tweets," those tiny little messages that consume no more than 140 characters. Twitter provides a search box expressly for this purpose.

"Let's see," I would say to myself, "I wonder if my old pal Phil Intheblank is on Twitter." I'd type "Intheblank" into the search box, hit enter, and more times than not turn up nothing. On a few tries I'd find Phil or Bob or Sally and add them to my "follow" list. I did this maybe 15 to 20 times (I wasn't counting) over the course of maybe 15 to 20 minutes (I wasn't keeping track) before getting this message in response to my last query: "Sorry, you've reached your limit on searches for now."

Say what? It's Friday afternoon, news is slow, I'm trying my best to become a good Twitter citizen ... and you're cutting me off like some drunk who just fell off a bar stool? You can stuff your sorries in a sack, Twitter.

Pique and curiosity prompted me to take the next logical step for one seeking an answer to a question about Twitter while actually being on Twitter. I fired this tweet out to my vast (not so much) network of Twitter followers: "Twitter search just told me: 'Sorry, you've reached your limit on searches for now.' ... (Here I used a naughty three-letter acronym for expressing incredulity.) No, seriously, (repeat naughty acronym) A limit on searches?"

I received one reply from a long-time friend/journalist/Twitterer: "I don't understand the search limit. Have you found any coverage of that?"

No was my answer, although I had just started looking for such coverage -- or any kind of an answer. I immediately found nothing directly on point. Scanned the Twitter FAQ and saw some passages relative to limits, but they were about sending messages and interacting with the Twitter API, near as I could tell. As for limiting searches by an individual? If it's in there, I couldn't find it.

Two colleagues who have logged more Twitter time told me they had never encountered or heard of the search limit.

Others have had the pleasure, though, and they are asking the same question: Why? Twitter has another search box that promises you can "See what's happening right now." I entered "limit on searches" and that query turned up two full pages of Twitterers just as baffled as yours truly by this seemingly arbitrary roadblock. Here are a few quotes lodged since my plaintive tweet on Friday:

I feel their pain, so the hunt for an answer would continue. I don't have any direct Twitter contacts. As noted earlier, I'm new to the service and have never had occasion to interview anyone from Twitter. The Twitter Web site offers no press contact (insert three-letter acro), so I resorted to filling out a user help request via their Web form. I quickly received an e-mail acknowledgement and tracking number so that I could keep up with Twitter's tireless efforts to address my inquiry.

That was Friday. Here on Tuesday afternoon that tracking number is all I have by way of a reply.

There's the telephone, I reminded myself yesterday. But Twitter does not provide any obvious phone number on its Web site (OK, OK, that acro is WTF, but you knew that already). However, I do know how to use The Google and found the digits there with little trouble. Called and got a recorded message: "Hi, this is Twitter. The best way to reach us is by e-mail, contact@twitter.com."

Yesterday I sent an e-mail with my questions about the search limit. Today, no reply.

Which brings us to this blog post. If someone from Twitter should reply via any communications channel whatsoever, you'll be the first to know.

Twitter Hires A Real Biz Pro

Last month, Twitter posted a job listing saying it was looking for someone who knew business, and now it looks like the microblogging site has found one--the first of several, it appears. Twitter has hired Kevin Thau, a veteran of tech companies Buzzwire and Openwave, as its director of mobile business development.

According to Twitter stats app Twitterholic, Thau has been using Twitter since early March of last year. He's been hired in part to handle the "crushing amount" of partnership proposals that Twitter receives. The mobile front is particularly important for Twitter, as it's the primary platform for many users. It's also been a contentious space, because it involves dealing with cell phone carriers around the world. Skyrocketing costs have forced Twitter to cut some of its international mobile numbers.

It's the first business development post that the San Francisco-based Twitter has filled. But it's currently also looking to hire a business product manager and a director of strategic partnerships. Twitter hasn't put forth a concrete business plan yet, but executives have hinted that business partnerships or corporate accounts may be part of the strategy.

We thought Twitter search engine TweetScan had faded into irrelevance after competitor Summize was acquired by Twitter last summer. Not so: today we discovered a little-known (but long-standing) feature of the service that’s incredibly useful.

With a database reaching back to December 2007, TweetScan allows you to download your Twitter archive at a page called TweetScan data. The benefits, according to TweetScan:

-Archive past exchanges
-Publish links and quotes
-Follow up on past projects
-Access offline
-View and reconnect with contacts

The only downside: like most Twitter apps, you need to enter your Twitter username and password to access the service. We consider TweetScan to be reputable, but there’s growing doubt about whether this is really the best means of Twitter authentication.

Karl Rove joins Twitter

Karl Rove, the Republican strategist whose influence on the president earned him the nickname "Bush's brain", has become the latest high-profile figure to join Twitter.

The former White House deputy chief of staff joined the popular micro-blogging website two days ago and has already attracted more than 1,700 followers – other Twitter users who choose to receive his updates.

Unlike other celebrities on Twitter like Barack Obama and Britney Spears, who delegate their posts to aides, Mr Rove appears to be taking a hands-on approach to the site, which allows users to post 140-character updates on what they are doing.

In one Tweet he confesses that he is "no new media ninja" but is being shown the ropes by an assistant, adding: "I like it so far!"

Most of his posts detail his television appearances, speaking engagements and articles, but he has also exchanged good-natured messages with other Twitter users.

In one message he revealed a glimpse of his former boss George W Bush's concern for his legacy, writing: "I used to get steamed up over some editorial and the President would say, 'History will get it right and we'll both be dead!'"

At least two impostors have set up Twitter accounts under his name, so Mr Rove posted a message on his official website to confirm that he was the real thing.

Mr Rove stepped down from the White House in 2007 and has since worked as a political commentator for Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal and Fox News.

The strategist, who is reviled by many Democrats because for masterminding Mr Bush's 2000 and 2004 election triumphs, has a long way to go before he matches the Twitter popularity of the president-elect. Mr Obama currently has 165,414 followers.

Comedian Stephen Fry, television presenter Jonathan Ross and basketball player Shaquille O'Neil are among the site's celebrity users.

Who Do you Follow?

Getting followers on Twitter (http://twitter.com) is relatively easy, but what is really important in making Twitter a worthwhile experience is the type of followers you get - and the type of "Twitterers" you yourself follow. In the 3rd quarter of 2008, I was resting solidly at 70 followers, and had grown to that level after several months (I joined in January 08).

I decided then that Twitter could really be a good tool for me, but I did realize that in order to beef up my presence, I would need to increase the number of people I was following, rather than keep my up-until-then more "passive" approach to attracting followers - listing my Twitter account link in my email signature. I had watched other users randomly follow, follow, follow, getting quickly to one of the Twitter follow limits of 2000. Sure, they did get some follow-backs, and had hundreds more followers than my 70, but to me, it seemed like a "quantity over quality" sort of following that would not add value in either direction.

So I set out to follow people in areas specifically of interest to me, so that when I read their Tweets in my friends' timeline, I would get information relevant to me, both professionally and personally. First, I made a list of keywords. Here are a few of the ones I listed for my professional interests: Creative, Web, Design, Entrepreneur, Social Media, Online, Blog, Blogging, PR, journalism...all in all, I listed about 25 or so. Personally, I am interested in progressive politics, wine, dogs, animal rights, and restaurants, so I made a list of words in those areas. Finally, I was interested to connect with "Tweeple" in certain geographic areas: New York City, San Francisco, South Florida (Miami, Miami Beach, Ft. Lauderdale), Toronto, Vancouver, Washington DC, etc. Onto the list they went. When my list was complete, I utilized two tools to connect with these types of folk: The Twitter search feature (http://search.twitter.com) and Twitter Grader (http://twitter.grader.com).

The Twitter Search tool is amazing; you can search by a single keyword, but what is really helpful is the Advanced Search option. I highly recommend it. I found the Twitter Grader helpful to keep an eye on my ranking compared to other users, but what was very helpful to me was the recommendations of people to follow at the bottom of my "stats." Some were not relevant, or didn't have a high enough ranking themselves, but with each "refresh" I found at the very least one person that would be a good "follow fit" for me.
In a few short months, I not only went from a solid plateau of 70 to almost 1000 followers (maybe it will hit the big milestone by the time this goes online!), but - even more important - the tweets in my friend feed are completely customized to my personal and professional interests. To me, that is the biggest part of what makes Twitter such an incredible tool.

What Is The Purpose Of The Crunchies

Last night at the Crunchies, the Herbst theater in San Francisco was packed to capacity . In attendance to collect awards were Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels, Google product chief Marissa Mayer, Twitter founders Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Jack Dorsey, imeem founder Dalton Caldwell, and many more. (Read who won here). FriendFeed founder Paul Buchheit was so excited about winning Best Startup of 2008 that he videotaped the award from his seat (embedded below, go to the 2:20 mark to see what it was like to win from his vantage point).

In adition to the winners, Y Combinator's Paul Graham, Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur, and Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis also made appearances on stage. The slideshow above gives a feel for the event and the party afterward, which was in the stunning Rotunda of City Hall (thank you, MySpace). Or you can check out people's reactions on Twitter.

Facebook once again won the overall prize for the second year in a row, and Mark Zuckerberg also picked up the best CEO prize. During his acceptance speech, Zuckerberg's message to all the other entrepreneurs in the audience was that even during an economic downturn they can build something great and become a beacon of light for the rest of the industry. Microsoft's Ray Ozzie, who was on hand to accept the prize for Best Technology Achievement, struck a similar chord:

When we are in an environment with technological and environmental change, you have to focus on these new huge constraints, but also new opportunities for destruction or rebirth.

The easy VC money might have stopped flowing to startups, but that doesn't mean the world has stopped. I was acutely reminded of that fact simply by watching the hardened optimism of everyone in the theater. Some people compare the Crunchies to the Oscars of Tech, but we like to think of it more as a large family gathering. For all the blogs involved?Gigaom, VentureBeat, Silicon Alley Insider, TechCrunch?it's our way of saying, "Thank You" to all the startups and tech companies out there. My Top Five Twitter Aps

I wouldn't call myself a power Twitterer, but I've been using the brevity-focused social network site since last April, largely via auto-posted headlines from my Alpha Doggs network research blog. More recently, I've gotten into the habit of posting other comments. As a journalist, I find Twitter especially useful for tracking hot topics.

For those of you new to the Twitter game, here are some of the tools I use and my thoughts on them (last summer we posted a more elaborate slideshow highlighting tools). I will say that some of these programs tend to take their sweet time about dishing out results, but a lot are still new, even in beta. I should note that I tend to avoid using tools that require me to hand over my Twitter password: After all, hackers now have their claws into Twitter. And I've yet to start using Twitter on a mobile device. (Watch a slideshow of 12 tips for safe social networking.)

Software Assurance Protection: Bridging the Gap in Application Security for Open Source: Download nowWithout further ado, the tools:

• TweetDeck: It's an Adobe Air application currently in public beta that runs on Mac, Windows and Linux systems. It's useful for divvying up the people you follow on Twitter into groups (though wish I could create even more than the eight groups I have: Network World, CIOs/network execs, vendors, analysts), making it easier to follow their Tweets vs. doing so within the basic Twitter interface. It's also easier to Tweet from there than the basic Twitter interface in that you can immediately shorten your URLs within TweetDeck. I've seen some users dismayed that when they go to close a group they've created that they've actually deleted. Confess to doing this once myself.

• Twellow: Unsatisfied with Twitter Search and even Advanced Search, I've taken to more often using this Twitter Yellow Pages to search not only by keyword in Tweets, but by keywords in Twitterers bios. Found Twellow helpful in pulling together this list of 12 CIOs who Twitter.

• Twitter Grader: Kind of fun just to see how you rank on Twitter and to learn who the Twitter rock stars are. I scored an 85 out of 100 last time I checked. A solid B-plus… Though I suspect there might be some grade inflation going on. The program gives out an awful lot of 100s. Also features TwitSnip, a bookmarklet for tweeting content from any Web page.

• TweetStats: Provides colorful graphs of how many tweets you write by month and time of day and interface. I've been averaging 2.1 a day. That doesn't seem too obnoxious, but I suspect I've got the potential to become insufferable. The site claims it has 50,000-plus users.

• Tweettag: Another search tool, which searches by Twitter tags, typically front-ended by a # symbol. One nice feature is that when you search on a tag you are presented with a tag cloud of related tags.

New New York Tech Meetup

@Shakeshack kicked off the event, presenting their social experiment using Twitter to create a "new data set" around the community of people who have a sometimes scary obsession with the eatery and the length of the line to get your hands on a delicious burger.

TwiTerra presented its visualization of the Twitter "re-tweet" data set, displaying one way to think about the type of data set @Shakeshack is creating.

CoTweet presented a whole new interface for how groups of people can interact with messages via a single Twitter feed, in what could be seen either as a system for using Twitter as a 1920s style "party line" or as a corporate switchboard for tweets.

StockTwits showed its interface for using Twitter for reputation driven real-time stock tips.

The Shorty Awards presented its massively popular three-part "awards" program and spoke a bit of how it is morphing into a way to rate top Twitter feeds in various categories of interest.

Klout showed off its attempt to algorithmically measure impact and influence on Twitter.

Finally, one of my favorite projects, Botanicalls, showed off its project to bring your plants into the tweet-o-sphere.

Sure, all of these companies are using Twitter's API, and developing interfaces, features and the like that need Twitter to live tomorrow -- but what bets are they really making, what are they really developing? Coming out of the NYTM, I would argue that they are all making a very safe bet on a real-time future for the internet, not Twitter itself.

Twitter has grown because it is a fast way to easily route messages, and with a dead simple API it is a quick and easy way for the next generation of innovators to get up and running with a new "real time" or "social" project or company. Iis CoTweet the CRM of the future?. Is Shorty Awards or Klout going to provide the next "pagerank"? I haven't a clue. Is Botanicalls going to be part of the basis for smart real-time device interface? Not sure.

But I will say this -- this is real stuff, if Twitter goes away someone else (or a federation of someone elses) with a similar API will take its place and these projects and people will continue. Just as we make sure at drop.io that if need be we could get off our host (Amazon Web Services) at an acceptable cost, Twitter isn't going to hold these companies hostage for long.

So, coming out of this Meetup, I think it is time to start embracing the vibrancy of what people are building "on" Twitter in the New York tech community, and unless you want to bet against a future of highly open real-time communication, start investing in some Twitter based start-ups.

As a closing thought, remember another company with New York ties, Summize. Summize built core real time search technology. They started off working on an Amazon data set, and ended up selling to twitter based on how their groundwork enabled Twitter's data set. Someone that presented at the NYTM this week will do very well with the fundamentals they are developing, whether they do it "on" Twitter or elsewhere.

Google may need solvent ISPs, Microsoft might need Dell, and the U.S. might need an auto industry and a banking system, but these "Twitter" start-ups don't need Twitter.

Twitter's security ?

If you have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Windows 7, today is the day for the release of the first public beta of Microsoft's new operating system. It has received good reviews so far, so you just might fall in love with the supposedly leaner OS.

Not everyone is so keen to install Windows 7, though. In fact, Sam Diaz of ZDNet elaborates at length on the reasons not to install the beta of Windows 7. Your experiences might vary, so this is a decision that only you can make. The beta download does appear to be limited to the first 2.5 million users though, so you might just want to grab it while it's available.

Microblogging site Twitter has faced its first major phishing attack. At the same time, another security issue arose in which access to some administration tools were compromised literally back-to-back. Honestly, the unauthorized access sounds like the result of a poorly implemented tool to me. Still, that hackers will even bother underscores the growing prominence of Twitter. We wrote about Twitter in the past, when Nate Westheimer of Silicon Alley Insider outlined how Twitter could be worth $1 billion.

Oh yes, we're afraid it can. Because @film_girl countered his four aces of fame-trolling with a royal flush of oversharing. After happily tweeting "yes! Yes! Yes!", @film_girl went on to beg her 4.526 followers to promote her Twitter-proposal.. on Digg.

She's got 702 Diggs so far. Sounds like this couple was made for each other, good luck.

Did Weak Password Cause Twitter Attack

According to a report filed by Kim Zetter of Wired News, an 18-year-old hacker calling himself GMZ gained access to the account of a Twitter employee on Monday using a dictionary attack program that he created. Rohati, A New Company In The Security Space, Provides Identity and Access Control At Application Laye

Because the Twitter employee's account had access to administrative tools, GMZ was able to access any Twitter member's account by resetting the password.

GMZ told Zetter that he subsequently offered members of an online forum access to Twitter accounts upon request.

Twitter on Monday acknowledged that 33 high-profile accounts had been compromised, including accounts used by Facebook, Fox News, The Huffington Post, Barack Obama, Britney Spears, and CNN's Rick Sanchez.

Twitter said that it had identified the problem and that the company was dealing with it. It advised users to reset their passwords and to make sure that the e-mail address listed their Twitter's account setting area is legitimate.

Dictionary attacks, as the name suggest, are automated login attempts that try every word in the attack program's dictionary. Because this is a well-known attack method, passwords that consist solely of single words, regardless of language, are deemed weak.

Scheduled to be available to all customers during the week of January 12th, Truphone customers on both Apple devices can now reach their Skype friends via their Skype IDs. Separately, Truphone also announced today the availability of well-known instant-messaging services using the Truphone application on the iPod touch and the iPhone. The new features include full two-way instant messaging over MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Official Twitter feeds belonging to Barack Obama's campaign, Fox News and Britney Spears were hijacked to send out fake messages on Monday, two days after a password-stealing phishing attack targeted the microblogging service.

"A number of high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised this morning, and fake/spam updates were sent on their behalf," the company acknowledged on its website Monday. "We have identified the cause and blocked it. We are working to restore compromised accounts."

A fake message sent to followers of the Fox News Twitter feed announced that Fox host Bill O'Reilly "is gay," while a message from Britney Spears' feed made lewd comments about the singer. A tweet sent out from the Barack Obama account asked users to click on a link to take a survey about Obama and be eligible to win $500 in gasoline.

Though the fake tweets were decidedly unsubtle, the apparent compromise of the hugely popular micro blogging service could have more serious implications. Users increasingly rely on feeds from news sites and other trusted sources, and a more subtle fake Twitter message sent out from a compromised account could potentially wreak some havoc.

The flock of fake tweets followed a weekend phishing attack designed to steal Twitter passwords. It's not yet clear whether the two events are connected, though the company's warning on Monday hinted at a more widespread attack than just a handful of high-profile accounts. "As a precaution, it would be prudent to reset your Twitter password and make sure email in your settings is your own," the company wrote.

The phishing scam went after Twitterers set up to receive e-mail notification whenever they're sent a private direct message -- messages that generally come from trusted friends and followers. In this case, the e-mail notification urged them to visit a website.

Facebook Killing Twitter ?

Speculation that Facebook will kill Twitter is as old as Twitter itself. The latest round came from AllFacebook, not exactly an impartial source, who argued recently that Facebook API’s could be used to build a Twitter like service.

Normally I’d be coughing right now, but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.

Just before Christmas I installed a Twitter application on Facebook that imports all my tweets into Facebook as status messages. I don’t spend much time at all on Facebook, maybe 10 minutes a week, give or take, so I’m not a heavy user. I also don’t tend to interact a lot on Facebook either.

I had no expectations when installing the application, but thought simply that if I’m sharing it on Twitter, why not Facebook. Then something strange happened. I started getting emails that people were replying to my status messages. Not one or two, but lots. Sometimes six or more replies for one status upgrade. Perhaps not that remarkable, because on a good tweet I can get a lot more. But here’s the thing: those tweets nearly all received more responses on Facebook than on Twitter itself.

That I’m seeing this doesn’t make it a trend, but numbers here are important. I have less Friends on Facebook than Twitter, and yet Facebook is more popular overall than Twitter by over 10 times. But the friends I have on Facebook, often more selectively picked than Twitter, are not only on Facebook reading things, they’re actively engaging.

And I’m staggered.

Unlike some I don’t view either as a popularity contest; on Twitter in particular I regularly lose users with particular tweets, and I’ve always approached both as something I share on, not play to win on. But the use case Facebook vs Twitter starts to become compelling: if people are replying to me on Facebook, they might be saying interesting things on Facebook as well that I’m not reading. My time is precious, so should I therefore spend more time on Facebook and less time on Twitter?

As soon as Operation Cast Lead began to take shape just over a week ago, Dan Peguine started the program QassamCount, a system that updates users' statuses on Facebook with the number of Kassams that hit Israel.

Within the first three days, 10,000 people had donated their statuses to the cause.

Peguine first started a program counting Kassams about a week before the operation in Gaza began. He used Twitter, which sends users' statuses to all their "followers," to help people understand how often rockets hit the South.

"When you live in Tel Aviv and you read at the end of the day, '20 Kassams hit Sderot, Ashkelon,' you do not really understand what it means to live through this," Peguine told The Jerusalem Post. "So by having a feed that pops up every time a Kassam hits, I thought it would be a good way to convey this."

But all it takes is an email address to open a Twitter account. Someone posing as a company spokesperson could post misleading information and hurt a company’s brand, Rubel said.

This happened with oil giant ExxonMobil. Someone calling herself “Janet” started posting on Twitter under the account name “ExxonMobilCorp”. While this squatter’s posts defended the company, she was not sanctioned by it.

When someone asked her about the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, she replied that the disaster didn’t rank among the top 10 oil spills.

Shel Holtz, a respected blogger on corporate communications noted, “Clearly, Janet has had no communication training, since that response would provoke anger and hostility.”

Exxon Mobil has since usurped the Twitter account, which now sits inactive.

CNN Twitter Followers respond

CNN viewers had another opportunity to make themselves heard during today's ~~three ring circus~~ announcement from Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The indicted Governor appointed former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the Senate seat once held by Pres-elect Barack Obama.

But during the news conference, Illinois congressman Bobby Rush took to the microphone telling a national audience (on six cable news networks) that Burris should be seated because, in part, he would be the only African American in the U.S. Senate. Rush also said he would work with the congressional black caucus as well as Illinois senior Sen. Dick Durbin to make the appointment happen.

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez, who has more than 38,000 followers on Twitter, aired some of the "Tweets", including the one above.

Twitter Don’t Become Palm

Almost everybody who folllows my online adventures closely knows I’m a fan of yours. I Tweet up a storm at my own www.twitter.com/harrymccracken feed and there’s also a technologizer one that automatically Tweets every Technologizer story. When friends tell me they don’t understand you, I evangelize on your behalf. I can’t think of a tech product or service I use every day that I take more pleasure in.

But I’m increasingly concerned about you. Simply put, you seem to be profoundly complacent on multiple fronts. A few examples (all of which plenty of people have pointed out before me)…

–You bought Twitter-search company Summize back in July, but still haven’t deigned to put so much as a link to its impressive search engine in Twitter’s interface–except for the tiny one in your footer–let alone a search field. (You still make us go to search.twitter.com to find this most basic of features.)

–You haven’t added many (any?) of the obvious features that would make Twitter more useful, like the ability to really respond to a specific Tweet.

–You’re letting third-party sites such as Tweetree give Twitter obvious enhancements like embedded pictures and videos and threaded conversation views.

–Speaking of third parties, they’re doing much of the heavy lifting of making Twitter useful, via desktop clients such as Tweetdeck, phone clients such as Tweetie, and services such as TwitPic. Yet you do little or nothing to help your users find any of them.

–You haven’t introduced any money-making features, which leaves your users worried that you haven’t figured out a business model that’ll keep you going strong for years to come.

Much of this reminds me of the history of Palm. In the mid-1990s, it created the first truly usable PDAs. They were so usable in large part because they were so darn simple. And Palm refused to overcomplicate its products, while numerous more-powerful-but-less-simple competitors flopped.

For years, it worked wonderfully well for Palm and its customers–and the company miraculously managed to repeat the strategy successfully when it hopped from PDAs to Treo smartphones.

And then…it stopped working. While Palm was busy not mucking up its OS, other companies solved many of the issues that made their earlier products so unsatisfactory. Folks started to assume that smartphones would have rich, deeply embedded support for stuff like multimedia, which was tough for Palm to offer since its OS’s infrastructure was so antediluvian. In part because of the things it hadn’t done to upgrade its own OS, it was forced to take the soul-crushing step of making Treos that ran Windows.

Little by little, the company that once understood handheld computing better than any other lost its way, and lost much of its customer base. And the iPhone came along and instantly made Treos look archaic–just as the original Palm PDAs did to mid-1990s handhelds like Apple’s Newton and HP’s OmniGo.

For the past few years, Palm has been discovering how hard it is to surge back into a leadership spot once you’ve almost intentionally given up your lead. It’s pinning all its hopes on the Nova operating system that will apparently debut next week at the Consumer Electronics Show. I remain a Palm fan and have an open mind, so I’m working hard to be optimistic–but I don’t think you’ll find a single Palm-watcher out there who thinks that the most likely scenario involves Nova catapulting Palm back to glory, or who doesn’t think that the company was horribly complacent for far too many years. (Here’s a famous example of tough love…one which I thought about when I sat down to write this letter.)

David Saranga, Consul of Media and Public Affairs, will be taking questions about the situation in Israel and Gaza via Twitter, and anything that requires more than Twitter's 140 SMS-friendly characters will be posted to the Israel Consulate's blog.

14. Ask questions. Twitter is GREAT for getting opinions.

17. When you DO talk about your stuff, make it useful. Give advice, blog posts, pictures, etc.
18. Share the human side of your company. If you’re bothering to tweet, it means you believe social media has value for human connections. Point us to pictures and other human things.
19. Don’t toot your own horn too much. (Man, I can’t believe I’m saying this. I do it all the time. - Side note: I’ve gotta stop tooting my own horn).
20. Or, if you do, try to balance it out by promoting the heck out of others, too.

27. If you’re representing clients and billing hours, and tweeting all the time, you might hear about it.
28. Learn quickly to use the URL shortening tools like TinyURL and all the variants. It helps tidy up your tweets.
29. If someone says you’re using twitter wrong, forget it. It’s an opt out society. They can unfollow if they don’t like how you use it.
30. Commenting on others’ tweets, and retweeting what others have posted is a great way to build community.

Just login to Tweetree with your Twitter credentials, and - voilà! - you now have a super awesome, souped-up version of your Twitter account complete with threaded conversations, and the ability to view external media (think FriendFeed convos, YouTube videos) right within your stream. As a Twitter addict, I find Tweetree to be the spiffiest new Twitter toy on the block.

So many Twitterable things happen when you're not able to type anything, such as in the dark, or while running a marathon or while doing any number of other things. There should be a way to post tweets using voice-to-text technology over a cell phone. And now there is.

A service called HelloTxt, which happens to be the service I use to post Tweets on Twitter, has made a deal with another company called Dial2Do, which gives you the ability to post tweets with a phone call.

HelloTxt is a front end for posting short stuff. By posting just one message on HelloTxt, you simultaneously post on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Friendfeed and a bunch of others.

Dial2Do is a service like Jott or ReQall that gives you a phone number to call. You say a command, leave a message, and that message is transcribed into text and sent where ever you commanded it to be sent. Most people use these services to leave themselves reminders in their e-mail inboxes.

By combining HelloTxt and Dial2Do, you can command phone messages to be posted to your HelloTxt account.

This is great news, because once both HelloTxt and Dial2Do are set up, you just hit the speed dial on your cell phone, say HelloTxt, then say your post. Whatever you say gets transcribed into text and posted on Twitter, as well as all the other services you specified during setup.

Dial2Do also lets you listen to Twitter. It will read tweets from the people you follow over the phone. It also lets you post directly to Twitter without going through HelloTxt.

I was reading a blog post in Onlinesapiens Blog

It said not having a blog means you are not a player. If you lack that personal publishing presence, that means you don’t have a voice on the modern web. It’s a position of web marketing weakness.

If you are using social media to participate and build a reputation, you need to back it up with some substance. And though some may disagree, my take is that substance frequently requires more that 140 characters.

Twitter is not enough!!!

Start by researching and saving online your bookmarks. Then create a blog where you can add your content and reflections. Only then you should start tweeting.

Friends, family, or colleagues on Twitter, you can now find them. Now Twitter re-launched people search, which lets you search the service by username or first, last name to find other users. The feature had been taken down earlier this year when Twitter was experiencing downtime issues.

In addition to helping you find people, or simply see whether or not you’re the most popular Ann, Adam, or Susan on the service, the search interface integrates Twitter’s invite tool that lets you email your friends about Twitter.

Part of that tool is an address book import which will show you which of your contacts are already on Twitter so you can follow them. That feature’s also not new, but when included with Twitter’s now prominent people search, it could give yet another viral boost to the service.

Best of all, all of these features, at press time, are loading extremely fast, lending more credibility to the notion that Twitter’s performance issues are behind it. You can check out people search from here or from the new “Find People” link that has been added to Twitter’s main navigation menu.

Government ministers Tom Watson and David Lammy are among MPs who have signed up to a portal of parliamentarians' Twitter feeds

Tweetminster was launched on 18 December 2008, with four MPs: Cabinet Office minister Watson, the Labour MP Andy Reed, Grant Shapps of the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson, who mentioned the service on its launch day in the Commons.

Three more MPs have since joined: Liberal Democrat Lynne Featherstone, Labour MP Kerry McCarthy and higher education minister David Lammy.

Looks like a good way to get feedback without long discusions

Rate, Tag And Categorize Your Twitter Friends with TwitTangle

Another Twitter application launches. TwitTangle, a service that takes information about your followers from the Twitter API and enables you to put a layer on top by rating and tagging them, and also lets you categorize them in groups.

Like most Twitter apps, TwitTangle requires you to enter your credentials in order to use the service, so that’s up to you. If you do, you’ll find that the look and feel closely resembles that of the Twitter web version, with some added functionality but without the ability to see replies or direct messages. You can filter tweets by period or by tag. Of course, you need to tag all your friends first, so that’s quite a drag if you follow lots of people. Once you’ve taken the time to rate your friends (from ‘Just friends’ to ‘I love them’), you can view a custom timeline that takes your ratings into consideration and shows the updates of your best rated friends first.

Most useful is the Groups feature, which users have long been waiting for Twitter to implement themselves (for the record, they do offer this functionality for the Japanese version), but it’s not nearly enough to justify using TwitTangle daily, particularly because the basic features that make Twitter a good two-way communication channel are not in there. Also, there are no RSS feeds, nor a search function.

Definitely needs more work.

‘Twas the night before Twitmas, when all through the house,

The E-cards were printed with Holiday Flair,

And a Blip.FM Christmas tune hung in the air;

The rugrats were down for the count in their beds

While visions of Playstations danced in their heads;

Had just settled down to build, box, wrap and stack;

When on both of our speakers, there arose such a clatter,

We refreshed our screens to see what was the matter.

To open new windows I sprang in a flash,

Double-clicked Tweetdeck and awaited a crash.

My home page awash in ani-gif Snow,

Gave a holiday luster to the pages below.

When what to my tired bloodshot eyes did appear,

But an @tweet from Santa all filled with good cheer.

A 140 character message so slick,

That I knew in an instant it came from St. Nick.

More rapid than fingers can fly, the tweets came,

And he messaged his reindeer @ each one by name,

“@Dasher! @ Dancer! @ Prancer @Vixen!

@ Comet! @Cupid! @ Donder @Blitzen!

To the Twitter Elite! To the folks at Twitwall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As bits in a torrent with DSL fly,

When they hook up and download with only one try,

So up to the top of the Twitter Trends flew,

Those Twittering Reindeer, and St. Nicholas too.

And quickly I favorited each one as proof,

Of the pokes and the prods of each Qwertying hoof.

Then I started to type a reply when I found,

That the program had closed and the OS shut down.

I turned to the fireplace and sat back in shock,

For despite ADT, the deadbolt, and the lock,

The man of the hour had invaded our space,

And he stood there, arms crossed, with a smile on his face.

He had widgets and gadgets and software and more,

And he spilled it all out of his bag to the floor,

Then he unplugged the monitors, Wi-Fi and cable,

And stacked them all neatly on Ma’s coffee table.

He waved his fat arms and the phosphors, they flew,

And he showed us a new thing that Santa can do,

While all we could do was to sit, and to stare,

He opened up Facebook right there in the air!

He filled in the profiles, our children and friends

And the others neglected by retweets and sends.

He clicked on the X in the far upper right,

And he winked, and it all disappeared from our sight.

Then laying his finger aside of his nose,

He turned to our chimney, and up it he rose.

We heard music and laughter, we rose and we hugged,

Then we glanced at the Internet cables, and shrugged,

For the moment the lolcats and e-mail and Spore,

By their silence gave Christmas a little bit more,

Of the spirit of family, magic and cheer,

That we expect from this time of the year.

We stepped to the window and watched the night sky,

As the sleigh, and the reindeer, and Santa flew by…

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Twitmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

Fund Raising With Twitter

Laura Fitton of Pistachio Consulting started a new kind of fundraising drive: an effort to raise $25,000 for a nonprofit called charity: water, This charity works to bring clean, safe water to developing countries. Laura chose Twitter as her way to raise $25000.00. She was aware of the economy being difficult for many people, she didn't want to ask for large amounts of money "I asked for $25,000," she says, "which would be just $2 for each reader I have on Twitter."

In four days, @wellwishes had raised over $5,000. Average pledge size has been $8.50, the median is $2. And the beneficiary has taken notice. "I see micro-giving as the next stage of online fund raising," says Scott Harrison, founder and president of charity: water. "The idea of thousands of $2 gifts adding up to wells in Africa that impact thousands of lives is something everybody can get behind."

Obama's campain looked similar , but @wellwishes is a whole new model because it incorporates convenient, tiny donations made right on Twitter. Using payment service from a company called Tipjoy, it's both simple and social to give. Your pledge shows up on Twitter as "p $2 @wellwishes for charity: water to save lives" (This is shorthand for "pay $2 to the Charity organization whose user name on Twitter is wellwishes.") And that message goes -- instantly -- to all of the people who follow you on Twitter.

Laura Fitton (her Twitter user name is Pistachio) kicked off the campaign with an announcement of the experiment:

In a later Tweet, she made her appeal:

I want something TOTALLY insane for Christmas: 12,500 people each to donate $2 for clean water @wellwishes.
And many did. Okay, these are pledges, not donations. But just as poor people pay their micro-loans, so micro-donors make good on their pledges -- so far, an astonishing 86% have come through.

And then there's the fact that the request gets personalized as people pass it on. Some add just a phrase: "very cool". Others say the same thing, but with more characters: "small bits via Twitter + big audience = better world".

The message is as important as the medium --- using Twitter/Tipjoy, everyone who participates is both a donor and a broadcaster.

What is great about this system is that for a couple of dollars you are helping people make a difference in the world. I hope this trend continues.

Plane Crash Survivor Sends Tweets

When a Continental Passenger plane skidded off the runway at Denver airport on Saturday, the 155 passengers and crew might have been understandably preoccupied with how they would escape from a plane that was being engulfed by flames. But for software engineer Mike Wilson the first priority was to report on his disrupted travel arrangements to his followers on Twitter.

After the crash he delivered a detailed account of the crash to users of the service - down to the airline's failure to offer him a drink. Here is his Tweets

Dell Uses Twitter to Make $1,000,000 worth of Sales

Michael Dell should get credit for pioneering the direct sale of PCs to the public. The reality is he was not the first but he did it better than the rest.

When it was reported that Dell had sold a million dollars in sales using Twitter, people take notice. This is a small amount of sales for Dell but in this economy the test project was a success.

"It's not rocket science, but give them credit for jumping on it," said an executive with another PC maker. "Everyone can do the same thing--and they likely will."

"We did it as an experiment," said Dell's Bob Pearson, who heads up communities and conversation for the company. "We wanted to see whether people would sign up." By that measure, it was a success. Pearson said that about 65 Twitter groups had formed in the last half year. "It showed us that there are a certain number people who want alerts about certain types of products."

One thing is proven that online people like to share ideas and take recommendations from thier peers.

Twitter is in Overdrive

Twitter Adds Search Function "People Search"

A people search function has finally added to Twitter website.

Twitter has taken a while to add this function but what it means is that you can search for someone by their real name.

The first users to use this function reported getting mixed results. names they were not searching for were showing up in the results.

The results showed the search is caps sensitive When you take off the caps, and as long as the person you are looking for is a Tweet, then you should be able to find them no problem.

You can either search for names in the main search bar or go to the new, dedicated 'Who Are You Looking For?' option.
